Readers witness through Kiera's eyes the violence, terror, neglect, and rage that are her everyday life. Surly, defiant, and a tough punk/goth teenager, Kiera struggles through her daily hellish existence with the help of her ever faithful and goofy friends.
Mandy, Kiera's best girl friend, is the glue that holds the group together. Raised by a single mom, she's tough, self-reliant and has her own point of view. Max, a tall, brooding goth, is trying to get a band together, and make it through junior year without any major problems-- like detention. Andy, the red-headed human superball is the comic relief in almost any situation. Combined, these three are the most loyal friends that anyone could ask for and shine brightly into Kiera's dark and violent world.
Escaping the tiny, backwater Indiana town they live in is necessary to get their hands on any decent music. So, they take off for Wax Trax in Chicago every chance they get and have a blast when they discover after-hours at a club called Medusa's, widening their social experiences as well as social circles.
